C and C++ programming for Atari TOS

C was developed in the early seventies. It became the standard language for Unix systems. Soon it was ported to home computer systems in a lot of varities. Not only applications, but also many Operating systems are written in C. Apart from Unix also Linux, Windows, the MAC OS and TOS especially GEM are for the greater part written in C. C is now (again) the most popular programming language. Java was it for some years but it is dethroned by good old C. C is more than a short hype. It is used in all sorts of embedded devices, IOT and cross-platform programming. Portability is a key word and also efficiency.

The original GEM Developers Kit for the Atari ST contained the ALCYON C compiler and libraries for GEM.

C++ has object-oriented programming (OOP) features. You can use OOP in C++ but it is not mandatory. So not every C++ program is object-oriented!

GEM (or Graphics Environment Manager) is an operating environment which was created by Digital Research (DRI) since 1984 for use with the DOS operating system on Intel 8088 and Motorola 68000 microprocessors.
